2 e-moto riders killed in Sacramento County crash with pickup; alcohol suspected
Two e-moto riders were killed Monday night after a speeding pickup truck struck them as they were stopped at a stop sign in the Mather area of Sacramento County, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported about 9:15 p.m. near Eagles Nest Road and Woodring Drive, just south of Mather Golf Course, CHP logs showed.
Officer Angie Monroe, a spokesperson for CHP’s East Sacramento office, said a Nissan Titan pickup was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control and struck the riders.
Four people were in the pickup at the time of the crash, Monroe said.
Two men fled the scene into nearby fields, according to CHP. One was detained and later released. Another was arrested at his home on suspicion of felony hit-and-run causing great bodily injury or death.
Two other people in the pickup were hospitalized with injuries, Monroe said.
CHP said the riders and the people in the pickup knew one another and may have been drinking together earlier in nearby dirt fields. Alcohol is suspected as a factor in the crash.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the identities of the two riders after their families are notified.
The crash remains under investigation.
