An inmate who allegedly assaulted two correctional deputies while being moved between two cells at the Butte County Jail on Tuesday is facing additional charges for doing so, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday.

The inmate, a 38-year-old Chico man, allegedly bit two correctional officers on their hands while resisting a planned movement to another cell in Butte County Jail on Tuesday night.

The suspect was originally arrested Monday by the Chico Police Department for criminal threats, false imprisonment and brandishing a weapon. He has been additionally charged with assault, resisting arrest, and assault on a custodial officer following the incident, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Facebook post Wednesday afternoon.

According to officials, the inmate initially indicated that he would comply with the housing movement, which officers began around 8:45 p.m. Tuesday. However, authorities said he resisted and attempted to force his way out of his cell. After receiving commands to stop and during an ensuing struggle with correctional officers, he allegedly bit a correctional deputy and sergeant on their hands.

Additional deputies responded and restrained the inmate without further incident. The injured sergeant was transported to Oroville Hospital where he received treatment, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The incident remains under investigation.
