Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies on Friday searched a medical building in Carmichael after receiving what turned about to be unfounded reports of an intruder.
Authorities received reports of an intruder about 12:15 p.m. at the Mercy Physicians Plaza building on the Mercy San Juan Medical Center campus in the 6500 block of Coyle, just west of Dewey Drive.
Deputies arrived and conducted a methodical search of the building, looking into every room on the three floors of the building, according to radio dispatch recordings reviewed by The Sacramento Bee.
Staff and others inside the building reported the medical facility had been locked down as authorities searched. Shortly before 2 p.m., Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Ed Igoe announced that deputies had searched the building and found no intruder inside.
He said the reports of an intruder had been deemed a “false alarm,” and the building was being reopened.
The incident began after a caller reported that someone inside the medical building had told her there was a gunman, but the caller never saw the armed man, Igoe said.
Along with sheriff’s deputies, officers from the California Highway Patrol, the Citrus Heights Police Department, the Sacramento Police Department and the Rancho Cordova Police Department responded to the medical building.
Igoe said the entire medical building was cleared and evacuated as deputies investigated. Deputies discovered the identity of the original man who claimed there was a gun. Igoe said that man was detained by Citrus Heights police in the area and turned over to deputies. The incident remained under investigation as of Friday afternoon.
No injuries were reported, Igoe said, and deputies did not find a gun.
