Teen convicted for ‘violent’ racial hate crime in Grass Valley, Nevada County DA says
A Nevada County jury on Thursday convicted a man for his role in a violent, racially motivated hate crime that occurred in Grass Valley in December, the Nevada County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday.
Chasen Ryder McIntire, who was 18 at the time, verbally and physically attacked an African American man with at least two other teenagers in the parking lot of a Target store in Grass Valley on Dec. 3, 2025. After a jury trial that began June 2, McIntire was convicted of three felony counts of assault, battery and conspiracy to commit assault and battery, as well as a misdemeanor count of exhibiting a deadly weapon.
The jury also found that the crimes were motivated by the victim’s race, prosecutors said in the social media statement.
“This was a senseless and brutal act of violence,” District Attorney Jesse Wilson said in a statement. “Nevada County has no tolerance for racially motivated violence or for groups who believe they can intimidate, terrorize, or assault others based on race.”
According to evidence presented at trial, the victim was working in the parking lot on Dec. 3 when a vehicle carrying several people, including McIntire, approached him. Members of the group began hurling racial slurs at the man and one challenged the victim to a fight. When the victim declined and said he was working, the group indicated it intended to attack him, the DA’s Office said.
McIntire brandished a knife, prompting the victim to try to flee. McIntire’s accomplice then tripped the victim, and the group began to kick, strike and spit on him.
Several key portions of the incident were later corroborated by a witness, who heard the racial slurs used against the victim, the DA’s Office said.
The man was transported to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital with significant injuries after the attack.
Two other individuals involved in the attack, including a 19-year-old Grass Valley man and a juvenile, have been arrested in connection with the case. A fourth suspect, an adult, was identified by Grass Valley police in December, and authorities were working to locate and arrest him.
McIntire was previously arrested on felony charges after he allegedly struck a person in the head with a metal container, causing serious injury, on Oct. 31. He was released under Probation Department supervision on Nov. 3, according to a December statement from the Grass Valley Police Department.
