California Highway Patrol arrested a Sacramento man who police say evaded arrest and stole a patrol car, the Sacramento Police Department announced Friday afternoon.

Police said the incident began as officers were responding to a report of vandalism off Marysville Boulevard and South Avenue in Del Paso Heights around 12:30 p.m.

When officers attempted to detain the man, who has been identified as 28-year-old Isaac Paval, they said he stole a marked police cruiser and fled. He then led them on a chase southbound on Highway 99 through Sacramento County. California Highway Patrol joined the pursuit and stopped the vehicle near exit 267A on Turner Road in Lodi.

Video of the pursuit showed another marked vehicle attempting intervention techniques to halt the stolen cruiser’s progress. Paval eventually exited the vehicle and officers, including K-9 patrol, took him into custody.

In an afternoon news conference, Sacramento Police said Paval is currently being treated for injuries at a hospital, but will be returned to Sacramento.

He added that no bystanders were injured.
