California Highway Patrol arrested a Sacramento man who police say evaded arrest and stole a patrol car, the Sacramento Police Department announced Friday afternoon.

Police said the incident began around 12:30 p.m. as officers were responding to a report of vandalism off Marysville Boulevard and South Avenue in Del Paso Heights.

When officers attempted to detain the man, identified as 28-year-old Isaac Paval, they said he stole a marked police cruiser from one of the responding officers and fled. He then led them on a chase southbound on Highway 99 through Sacramento County.

California Highway Patrol joined pursuit and took Paval into custody after he eventually stopped the vehicle and surrendered near exit 267A on Turner Road in Lodi.

During an afternoon news conference, Sacramento police spokesman Officer Anthony Gamble said Paval was taken to a hospital for treatment, but will be returned to Sacramento and booked into the Sacramento County Jail. He told reporters Paval is currently on pre-trial probation for a DUI charge.

Gamble added that no one was injured.

He said as part of the investigation, officers will determine whether Paval accessed the rifle in the police vehicle.
