A Stockton big-rig driver accused of fleeing the scene after a fatal Interstate 80 crash near Clipper Gap that killed a Colfax driver last month was arrested in Martinez, the California Highway Patrol announced.

Officers from the CHP’s Auburn office responded to reports of a crash on Interstate 80 east of Clipper Gap just after 11 p.m. May 26. Investigators determined a Freightliner truck tractor hauling a water-filled tank trailer collided with the center divider, causing the trailer to separate and enter the eastbound lanes, where it struck a Ford F-150

The driver of the Ford, Michael Fiscus, 57, of Colfax, died in the collision.

Robert Bell, 60, who investigators identified as the driver of the tractor-trailer. CHP Auburn officials asked for the public’s help locating Bell after he fled the scene on foot.

On June 18, more than three weeks after the crash, CHP Auburn officers and members of the Placer County Regional Auto Theft Task Force located and arrested Bell in Martinez. He was booked into the Placer County Main Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter, CHP Auburn said in a statement Friday.

Authorities asked anyone with additional information about the crash to contact the CHP’s Auburn office at 530-401-9910.
