Shoplifting suspect arrested after Sacramento deputies say he attacked man with scooter

Police tape blocks entrance to a convenience store in San Luis Obispo County.

A shoplifting suspect was arrested Monday after an Arden Arcade standoff with deputies, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office announced.

About 11:30 a.m., a bystander reportedly witnessed a man shoplifting from a store and attempted to speak to him. The alleged shoplifter, a 27-year-old man, then swung a metal scooter and struck the bystander, causing injuries, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies tracked the suspect to a home in the 4100 block of Los Coches Way in the Arden Park area and surrounded the property.

After a standoff during which deputies attempted to persuade the suspect to “peacefully exit the residence,” the 27-year-old was taken into custody around 2 p.m., according to deputies.

He was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse because the victim from the store was over 65 years old, deputies said.
