Suspect in fatal south Sacramento Motel 6 shooting jailed after Las Vegas arrest
A man suspected in a deadly shooting June 9 in the lobby of a south Sacramento Motel 6 is in jail facing a murder charge after he was captured by authorities in Las Vegas, Sacramento County Sheriff’s officials announced Tuesday.
Matthew Nehemiah Arizaga, 22, was arrested on June 15 in Las Vegas by sheriff’s detectives with help from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and was being held without bail in the Sacramento County Main Jail. Arizaga was sought in connection with the 1:30 a.m. shooting at the Motel 6 in the 7400 block of Elsie Road in unincorporated Sacramento County.
Deputies responding to the motel early on June 9 after receiving reports of a shooting found a 21-year-old man with a gunshot wound, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. Emergency responders were called, but the man died at the scene. Sacramento County Coroner’s officials later identified the victim as Meikhi Anthone Blackshire.
The suspected shooter fled the scene.
Witness statements and video footage helped sheriff’s detectives identify Arizaga. Detectives learned he had fled to Las Vegas and obtained a warrant for his arrest on suspicion of murder.
Arizaga was extradited to Sacramento and booked into sheriff’s custody late Monday, the Sheriff’s Office said. He was scheduled to appear Wednesday in Sacramento Superior Court, according to Sacramento County jail records.
