Sacramento carjacking suspect who led police chase in 2023 is convicted
A man who carjacked a driver at gunpoint and led officers on a vehicular chase in 2023 has been convicted by a jury of multiple charges linked to the crime.
Jimmy Syhathep was convicted July 2 of carjacking, evading officers, hit-and-run and felony possession of a firearm, a spokesperson for the Sacramento District Attorney’s Office wrote in a statement issued Monday.
The statement said that on Jan. 16, 2023, Syhathemp fled from officers during an attempted traffic stop at the intersection of Stockton Boulevard and Fruitridge Road. He then led law enforcement on a three-mile car chase and an on-foot pursuit that ended in the 31-year-old’s apprehension by a K9 officer with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
In addition to having an extended magazine for ammunition in his pocket, investigators who later searched the scene found a firearm beneath an RV that they connected to Syhathep, according to the district attorney’s office.
Syhathep faces a maximum sentence of 30 years and eight months in prison when he is sentenced August 14.
