Sutter County landlord arrested after reportedly pointing firearm at tenants
A Sutter County landlord was arrested after reportedly pointing a firearm at two tenants during a dispute, the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.
Deputies responded to a call for service concerning an “aggressive landlord” at a residence in the 2000 block of Cornelius Road in East Nicolaus Monday afternoon, a spokesperson from the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a statement. The landlord, 62, of Rio Oso, allegedly pointed a firearm at two tenants after a verbal argument escalated and he “started to force entry and get aggressive.”
The Monday afternoon call was the second deputies had received that day from the tenants citing a verbal dispute with their landlord. Previous calls for service were issued on May 27, July 4 and July 5, with the Sheriff’s Office describing the conflict as “an ongoing issue.” The landlord had also been arrested on suspicion of battery on May 19 and again on May 29 for alleged assault and brandishing a replica firearm, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The landlord refused deputies’ commands to exit the property over the span of two hours, prompting the arrival of the Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Detail — a unit trained in responding to critical incidents and negotiation. The unit took the Rio Oso man into custody without incident Monday afternoon. No injuries were reported, the Sheriff’s Office wrote.
Deputies later executed a search warrant at the property and located a 12-gauge shotgun and .22-caliber rifle with ammunition for both firearms. The landlord was booked into Sutter County Jail Monday night on charges of resisting, delaying or obstructing a peace officer, brandishing a firearm in a threatening manner, battery, assault with a firearm, and criminal threats, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The incident remained under investigation Tuesday afternoon.
