Two people were arrested for stealing more than $34,000 worth of fuel over the course of five months, Placer County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday.

Placer County deputies were alerted to a theft in progress at a gas station in the Dutch Flat area around 3 p.m. on Friday, July 10, a spokesperson for the agency said. The theft marked the 12th to occur at the gas station since February, with the amount of fuel stolen over five months worth more than $34,000 total.

Officials arriving on scene identified two vehicles suspected of being used in the theft — one that had been left at the station, and the other that the suspects had fled in. Deputies tracked down the second vehicle at a hill in Roseville near Interstate 80 and Cirby Way. There, they conducted a traffic stop, during which they discovered large containers full of fuel in the truck bed.

Two suspects were arrested on charges related to the fuel theft: a 34-year-old man from Las Vegas and a 31-year-old Miami resident.

Both men were booked last Friday and released from Placer County Jail on Tuesday.

The investigation remained underway Thursday as deputies sought to confirm whether the suspects were connected to all 12 thefts, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
