A: According to Sacramento Superior Court online records, the trial for Daniel E. Caldwell is set for Sept. 21.

Caldwell, 54, is charged with eight counts of lewd or lascivious acts with a child younger than 14. He is being held in Sacramento County Jail in lieu of $1.4 million bail.

The Sacramento Bee reported that Caldwell was arrested in February 2009 on suspicion of inappropriate sexual behavior with at least eight different young girls. Online court records show that at a hearing on Jan. 15 of this year, he was found competent to stand trial.

Police said at the time of his arrest that Caldwell was accused of sexually assaulting or inappropriately touching the girls, ages 7 through 17, while camping, as they slept over at his house or while employed at his business, Big D’s BBQ, on Grand Avenue in Sacramento’s Del Paso Heights area. The victims were girls who trusted Caldwell, and included employees, family members and acquaintances.

The incidents allegedly occurred between 2000 and 2008.
