A California Highway Patrol helicopter crew on Sunday safely evacuated a Spanish man who hurt his ankle in a bad spill during a hike outside of Colfax.
The man, identified only as Mr. Sassi, was hiking with friends along Steven’s Trail when he tumbled 100 feet down a steep embankment, severely injuring his ankle to the extent he could not walk.
The hiking party summoned help by cell phone about 1 p.m. and the CHP chopper was dispatched. The crew determined the safest option was to hoist the hiker from the ground to the hovering helicopter.
The hoist was completed and the hiker delivered to an ambulance waiting in Colfax.
