Sacramento police warn public of telephone scam

Sacramento police are warning of a scam involving a caller seeking payment of a fine.

Police said they received multiple reports Thursday of a telephone scam targeting older adults. A man with a southern accent has been calling residents claiming that he works with a federal agency. He tells victims that they have failed to appear for jury duty and to avoid jail time, they are asked to open a PayPal account to pay a nonexistent fine.

Police urge people to talk with family members or friends who might be susceptible to such a scam. Anyone who has been the victim of a recent scam is advised to call the Sacramento Police Department’s non-emergency dispatch line at (916) 264-5471.
