Written shooting threat at Bella Vista High; deputies say not ‘credible’

Extra sheriff’s deputies are keeping watch over Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks today after a written shooting threat was discovered in a girls’ bathroom late Friday.

The threat, written on a bathroom wall, said: “I’m shooting up the school on Oct. 27. Make sure to be here.” A smiley face was at the end of the sentence.

This is the second such threat found in a bathroom on a San Juan Unified high school campus in the last week. On Oct. 17 a school employee found a similar threat in a boys’ bathroom at Rio Americano High School.

An online message Monday from Bella Vista High officials alerted families to the threat. “Law enforcement has conducted an investigation and determined that nothing indicates this is a credible threat, and believe it is similar to others recently made at our other district campuses,” said the email. “... Again there is no real threat and we are having a normal school day.”

The district also is sending extra staff to the school today to offer a larger adult presence, said Trent Allen, San Juan district spokesman.

The student who saw the bathroom message spread it via social media. The district is encouraging students to report such messages to parents, school officials or law enforcement.

Hundreds of students stayed home from school at Rio Americano last week because of that school’s threat. It wasn’t clear Monday if students at Bella Vista High were staying home.
