Update: Two people seriously injured in Highway 99 collision near Elk Grove
Two people were seriously injured in a three-vehicle collision Friday afternoon on southbound Highway 99 just south of Elk Grove.
The crash involving a silver Ford Fusion, silver Chevrolet Suburban and black Honda Civic was reported at 3:34 p.m., initially blocking all lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol. Both lanes of southbound Highway 99 reopened at 4:34 p.m., according to the CHP.
Detective Casey Robinson, a spokesman for the Elk Grove Police Department, which is handling the investigation, said a vehicle was northbound on west Stockton Boulevard, when it left the roadway and traveled through a wire fence onto southbound Highway 99. It struck a vehicle on Highway 99 head-on, and the second vehicle was then rear-ended by another vehicle.
Robinson said the drivers of the two vehicles that collided head-on were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. He said no one was injured in the third vehicle.
