An inmate in the El Dorado County Jail apparently hanged himself in his cell over the weekend.
The 34-year-old man has not been identified, pending notification of family. He was in jail on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and making criminal threats.
Correctional officers at the county jail in Placerville were delivering dinner to inmates at about 4:50 p.m. Saturday when they found the prisoner with “an item” around his neck that was tied to a top bunk.
Deputies entered the cell and cut the man free from the ligature and rendered medical aid. The inmate, who was alone in his cell when found, could not be revived.
