A 27-year-old man was arrested early Sunday after police said he fired a gun near a downtown nightclub and led officers on a chase that ended when his car crashed into a tree.

Officers in the area of 15th Street, between H and I streets, who were keeping watch over clubgoers late Saturday into Sunday, heard gunshots coming from a rear parking lot of a nearby club about 1:35 a.m., according to a Sacramento police report. The suspect fled in a car but was able to make it only about four blocks before crashing into a tree near 15th and L streets.

Officers said Jeremy Wade got out of his car and attempted to escape on foot, tossing a loaded handgun as he ran from officers.

Wade, whom police said witnesses identified as the gunman, was arrested on the spot. Neither he nor his passenger, who was inside the vehicle when it hit the tree, was injured.

Two people were grazed by stray bullets from the shooting but were expected to make full recoveries after being treated at a hospital, police said.

Wade was booked into Sacramento County jail on suspicion of resisting arrest, evading capture, driving while intoxicated, hit-and-run causing injury, assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest as well as multiple weapons violations. He was listed as being ineligible for bail as of Sunday afternoon.

According to a search of Sacramento court records, Wade has a history of felonies, including several previous weapons violations and receiving stolen property.
