Butte County sheriff’s officials seek to identify drowning victim

The Butte County Sheriff’s Office is trying to identify a man who drowned in the Feather River near Oroville on Sunday.

The Sheriff’s Office received a call shortly after 4 p.m. from a woman who had witnessed a drowning near the edge of her property near the 1200 block of Middlehoff Lane.

The woman told deputies that a man in his 20s had wandered onto her property. She told the man he was on private property and tried to get him to leave, advising him that the river was dangerous. The man, however, walked down to the river and tried to walk along the riverbank, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. The woman said the man then tried to swim across the river and drowned. She returned to her residence and called 911.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection personnel arrived about 4:37 p.m. and found the man under water about 75 feet from the riverbank. The Sheriff’s Office’s marine unit assisted in taking the victim to shore while Cal Fire personnel administered CPR. The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Sheriff’s officials said the man has not been identified and ask anyone who might have information pertaining to the incident to call the Sheriff’s Office’s Coroner’s Division or the watch commander at 530-538-7321 or 530-891-2711.
