An El Dorado County jail inmate who apparently hanged himself in his cell last month has been identified as 34-year-old Lawrence Spies.
Correctional officers at the county jail in Placerville were delivering dinner to inmates about 4:50 p.m. Sept. 19 when they found Spies with “an item” around his neck that was tied to a top bunk, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.
Deputies cut the inmate free and began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. El Dorado County fire personnel arrived and Spies was pronounced dead at 5:03 p.m. His name had been withheld pending notification of family.
Spies was in jail on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and making criminal threats.
