Ask Sacto 911 crime Q&A: What is status of three people accused of Elk Grove mailbox break-ins?

Q: Do you have an update on the status of Leonard Velasco, Joseph Ryan and Keri Southwood, who were arrested in February in connection with mailbox break-ins in Elk Grove?

Jason, Elk Grove

A: Two of the three have entered guilty pleas and one is awaiting trial.

According to federal court records available online, Keri Southwood and Leonard Velasco pleaded guilty to bank fraud and attempted bank fraud, as well as aggravated identity theft. Southwood is to be sentenced Dec. 8, and Velasco on Dec. 15.

A jury trial for Joseph Ryan is set for April 4. A trial confirmation hearing is scheduled March 1.

The three were arrested Feb. 12 in connection with more than 60 mailbox break-ins that had occurred in the Elk Grove area since Jan. 1.

Police and U.S. postal authorities said Elk Grove had experienced an unusually large number of such break-ins. Targeted were free-standing cluster boxes, which usually have about a dozen locked slots for individual homeowners and typically are in newer developments.
