A man drowned Thursday morning after the vehicle he was driving went off Highway 160 into the Sacramento River near Courtland.
California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Michael Bradley said the vehicle, a silver Mercedes, was traveling at high speed northbound on Highway 160 about 9 a.m. when for some reason it left the road and went into the water. He said a witness who came onto the bridge saw the car in the water and spotted a man about 25 feet off shore who said he couldn’t swim. The witness swam toward the man. but the man went under water before he could reach him, Bradley said.
The Drowning Accident Rescue Team was summoned and found the man’s body shortly after 11 a.m. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Bradley said it was raining when the vehicle went into the water. The wet road and speed likely were factors in the crash, he said.
