Westbound Interstate 80 is closed to traffic at Donner Lake Road due to a fatal crash west of Castle Peak.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the closure is expected to last until about 10:30 p.m.
CHP Officer Pete Mann said a driver for some reason lost control of a vehicle and crashed into the median where Caltrans crews were working. Munn said the fatality was an occupant of the vehicle that ran off the road.
The California Department of Transportation reported that the crash occurred about 2 p.m. when the motorist drove into a well-marked work zone and struck two Caltrans heavy equipment vehicles.
One Caltrans worker was taken to a hospital for evaluation and released, officials said.
Authorities are turning back or holding all traffic at the Gold Ranch exit just east of the Nevada state line. Caltrans reported that overhead message boards on I-80 in Nevada are also alerting truckers and motorists to the westbound closure.
Only local traffic is being allowed through to reduce the backlog of motorists in the Truckee area. Those vehicles are being detoured in stages at the Donner Lake interchange to Donner Pass Road, old Highway 40, which rejoins I-80 at Soda Springs.
Eastbound traffic is not affected.
