Whatever became of Tammy Holycross?

– Jonathan, Sacramento

Tammy Holycross pleaded guilty in Sacramento Superior Court to torture and second-degree murder in the 1996 death of her 3-year-old son, Adrian Conway.

Now 47 years old, she is serving a sentence of 23 years and four months, and is incarcerated at the California Institution for Women in Corona.

According to stories in The Sacramento Bee, Holycross was arrested Jan. 21, 1996, after her little boy was admitted to the UC Davis Medical Center with head injuries from a beating. Doctors said the youngster also was severely malnourished and had been tortured. He reportedly had cigarette burns and other scars from abuse stretching back many weeks and months.

Adrian’s death occurred two months after Sacramento County’s Child Protective Services closed its investigation of the Holycross household without taking any action. The probe was prompted by a complaint from a school official who said the Del Paso Heights home was an unsafe environment of squalor and neglect.

The case led to stricter procedures at CPS for investigating child abuse and new approaches to help protect vulnerable children.
