Elpidio DeJesus Tellez was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison Friday for the Nov. 7, 2012, shooting death of Jesse James Nunez outside the Monte Carlo bar and grill in midtown Sacramento.
Sacramento Superior Court Judge Ernest W. Sawtelle imposed the term as the result of a jury’s verdict in September that found Tellez, 37, guilty of second-degree murder for the shooting of Nunez, 36, outside the bar at S and 15th streets.
Nunez had four children and worked two jobs at the time of his death, according to his family. Authorities believe Tellez shot Nunez because the victim was involved with the defendant’s former wife.
