Calaveras County Sheriff Gary Kuntz died Thursday night at his home.
Kuntz, 63, was pronounced dead around 9:20 p.m. A statement from the sheriff’s office noted that his death was untimely but did not release a cause.
“The sheriff’s office offers its condolences to the Kuntz family,” said Sgt. Anthony Eberhardt.
Kuntz was elected in 2014 to a second four-year term as sheriff.

After joining the sheriff’s office full time in 1986, he worked his way up from deputy to lieutenant before being elected sheriff.
