A house fire near Freeport Boulevard and Fruitridge Road sent flames shooting a hundred feet into the air that could be seen for blocks around. The fire, on the 5000 block of Hillard Way, started about 11:30 p.m. Friday.
It drew a massive response from the Sacramento Fire Department with dozens of engines converging on the scene. Neighbors said there may have been a man living in the house but no one had emerged.
Firefighters worked for more than an hour to get the fire under control as flames continued to erupt from the roof. A disabled couple living next-door were evacuated because the fire threatened neighboring homes.
