Man gets 50-to-life for south Sacramento murder

A Sacramento judge sentenced a man today to 50 years to life in prison for a fatal shooting last year outside a south-area gas station.

Superior Court Judge Curtis M. Fiorini imposed the term on Taejuan Markell Jackson, who is now 20, for the Dec. 21, 2013, killing of Juwan Howard, 19.

The shooting took place outside the Fast Trip gas station on Florin Road after ongoing tension between Jackson and some friends of Howard in the Elder Creek neighborhood, according to a district attorney’s summary of the case.

More than a dozen sheriff’s deputies were needed to separate the families and friends of the victim and the defendant when tensions arose in the courtroom hallways after the sentencing.
