Man killed in south Sacramento collision

A Sacramento man was killed in a two-car collision Friday evening on Elder Creek Road in south Sacramento, the California Highway Patrol reported.

CHP said James William Bates, 46, was killed after his car collided with a pickup truck that was backing into a private driveway on Elder Creek Road, east of Mayhew Road. Bates’ vehicle, a GMC Sierra pickup, was engulfed in flames.

Officers said Bates was speeding eastbound when the accident occurred. He was pronounced dead at UC Davis Medical Center.

There was no word on whether the driver of the second vehicle was injured. He was identified as Gevork Arabyan, 30, of North Hollywood.
