In May 1993, my neighbor, 18 years old at the time, was killed on Walnut Avenue. Did they ever find who did it?

Staar, Sacramento

You may be referring to a man identified in stories in The Sacramento Bee as Ruben Johns, 18, who was killed May 20, 1993, at his home in the 5000 block of Walnut Avenue, near Madison Avenue, in the Foothill Farms area.

Two men, Damian Mitchell and Lamar Simms, were convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.

Mitchell also was convicted of using a firearm and committing an offense while out on bail. He already had been sentenced to eight years in prison for a prior assault with a firearm, the prosecutor said.

According to stories in The Bee, Johns was shot about 9:30 p.m. following an argument. The prosecutor said Johns had been threatened and defended himself by stabbing Simms with a knife. Mitchell then picked up Simms’ shotgun and killed Johns.

Mitchell, now 43 years old, is in San Quentin State Prison, and Simms, 39, is in California State Prison, Sacramento, in Folsom.
