A former civilian employee with the Sacramento Police Department was sentenced Monday to 180 days in county jail after pleading no contest to grand theft while he was acting administrative manager of the agency’s property division.
Ronald Olsen, 60, was accused of stealing items from the property division, including power tools, electronics and musical instruments. No firearms or weapons were stolen. The crime came to light in June after another employee became suspicious about a missing piece of property scheduled for disposal, authorities said. Police later launched a criminal investigation.
Prosecutors said Olsen admitted to the thefts and cooperated with the investigation. Olsen, a 33-year employee of the city, will serve five years of formal probation in addition to jail time.
Olsen resigned from the Police Department on Aug. 7 while the investigation was ongoing. He was arrested in September on suspicion of grand theft and possession of stolen property. He entered the no-contest plea last month.
