Auburn police arrested a 28-year-old man late Friday on suspicion of entering a house, stealing a purse, then trying to run over one of the home’s residents with a sport-utility vehicle.
Police arrested Adam Pettibone of Auburn on suspicion of burglary and assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held on $250,000 bail.
According to police, officers received a call just after 8 p.m. Christmas Day about a nude man standing near a house. Officers then received a report that a naked man had just entered a nearby home and that the homeowner’s boyfriend had run after him.
During the chase, the nude man got into a Chevrolet SUV and tried to hit his pursuer as he fled the scene, police said. The vehicle hit the man but he was not injured.

Police investigators later discovered that a purse had been stolen from the house. Officers found the suspect’s vehicle, linked it to Pettibone, and found that he had some of the victim’s stolen property, according to police.
Auburn Police Sgt. Tucker Huey said Saturday the investigation is ongoing and that officers do not yet know why Pettibone was naked.
For the record, Friday’s chilly temperatures topped out at 46 degrees in Auburn with a low of 32 degrees.
