Rocklin police were partially successful in thwarting the theft of brand new luxury vehicles early Monday.
A cleaning crew arriving to work at Mercedes-Benz of Rocklin, 4747 Granite Drive, about 4:30 a.m. Monday noticed people on the dealer’s lot at a time when the business was not open.
When they got closer, they saw a Mercedes and another make of car being driven away. A member of the crew called 911 and Rocklin dispatch was provided the descriptions of the cars.
Arriving officers saw cars matching the descriptions enter westbound Interstate 80 at Rocklin Road. Officers pulled the driver and passenger in the non-Mercedes over near Douglas Road in Roseville.

The Mercedes, which turned out to be stolen, continued west on the freeway and has not been recovered. Officers eventually booked the two men in the stopped car, Will A. Gatlin III, 26, and Kingikirah Stevenson, 21, both of Oakland, into the Placer County jail on suspicion of auto theft and conspiracy to commit a crime.
A third man, who continued down the road in the Mercedes, is still wanted. A fourth person may also be involved, police said.
“It turns out that four vehicles were taken,” said Rocklin police Sgt. Tom Dwyer. “Two were recovered abandoned less than a mile from the dealership. The other two are outstanding.”
He said all the vehicles taken from the lot were new, recently delivered Mercedes – three sedans and a sport utility vehicle.
