A woman died early Tuesday afternoon when she was struck by a Union Pacific train on Power Inn Road north of Fruitridge Road in Sacramento.
Francisco Castillo, a spokesman for Union Pacific, said the incident occurred about 1 p.m. at the Power Inn-Fruitridge Road crossing. The pedestrian who was struck was in her 60s, the Sacramento Police Department reported. No one aboard the train was injured.
Castillo said a preliminary investigation indicates that the woman was walking alongside the railroad tracks and was on the crossing pad, but walking parallel to the tracks, when she was hit. He said all crossing signals were working properly.
The train, made up 110 rail cars of various types, was en route from Roseville to Fresno.
