A horse died in a collision with a car early Wednesday morning in Citrus Heights.

Three men in the car suffered minor-to-moderate injuries in the crash around 1 a.m. Wednesday at Auburn Boulevard and Hackney Way. When Sacramento Metro Fire District crews arrived on the scene, they found that a small car had collided with the horse, trapping one man inside the vehicle.

That man had to be extricated by firefighters. All three men were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The horse was one of four steeds that escaped from a nearby paddock and were running down the roadway. The force of the collision sent the horse onto the car hood.

The heavy animal then smashed the windshield and continued over the top of the vehicle, suffering fatal injuries.

The other three horses were rounded up.
