Davis police offer residents free gun locks
The Davis Police Department is offering free gun locks and firearms safety information.
The gun locks are available through a partnership with Project ChildSafe, a nationwide firearm safety education program developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and supported by the firearm industry, according to a department news release.
Davis police will provide accompanying safety kits through Project ChildSafe, also at no cost to residents.
A key goal of the program is to prevent a loaded firearm from being left in a house where a child can pick it up and play with it, police said. The firearm safety brochure included with the gun lock explains the importance of safe handling and secure storage of firearms.
Police encourage anyone who owns a firearm to store it in a location that is not accessible to children or other unauthorized individuals. Ammunition should be stored separately.
The free gun locks can be picked up from the front lobby of the Davis Police Department, 2600 Fifth St.
