A 25-year-old motorcyclist died Thursday afternoon when he crashed into the rear of a big rig on Interstate 80 near Northgate Boulevard in Sacramento’s Natomas area.
California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Chad Hertzell said the crash occurred at 3:25 p.m. on a section of eastbound I-80 where, due to construction, through traffic is diverted to inside lanes that are separated from outer lanes by a concrete barrier. Hertzell said a 2007 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle was lane splitting, traveling 50 to 60 mph in the Nos. 1 and 2 lanes on the outer portion of the freeway, when traffic began to slow. Hertzell said the motorcyclist clipped a pickup truck, then lost control and struck the back of a big rig.
The motorcyclist, who was from the Sacramento area, was pronounced dead at the scene, Hertzell said. His name has not been released pending notification of family.
No one in the pickup was injured, Hertzell said, and the big rig was directed to proceed to CHP truck scales on I-80 to evaluate damage.
