A security guard patrolling an area of vacant buildings in Sacramento near Interstate 5 and the American River shot a man who attacked him with a large tree limb, police said.
The fatal encounter occurred just before 1 p.m. Saturday when the security guard approached a man on the 500 block of Bercut Drive near Richards Boulevard, said Traci Trapani, a Sacramento Police Department spokeswoman.
The man became aggressive, armed himself with the limb and attacked the security guard, Trapani said. The security guard fell to the ground, drew his firearm and shot the man, she said.
During the scuffle, the guard suffered a broken wrist, Trapani said.

Trapani declined to release the guard’s name due to the pending investigation. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will later release the identity of the dead man, she said.
Trapani said the Sacramento County district attorney will determine whether the shooting was justified.
The security guard’s wrist was treated at a local hospital, she said. He has not been charged.
