Sacramento coroner identifies woman allegedly shot by boyfriend during New Year celebration
The name of the woman allegedly accidentally shot and killed by her boyfriend during a New Year's Eve celebration in Sacramento County has been released.
She was identified as Kayley Leavitt, 23, of Sacramento.
At 12:06 a.m. Thursday the Sacramento County Sheriff's Communications Center received several calls reporting that a young woman had been shot in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 5700 block of Callie Lane.
Deputies responded to the apartment complex near Madison Avenue and Hackberry Lane where they found the wounded Leavitt. She was rushed to the hospital with a life-threatening injury where she was pronounced dead.
Sheriff's department spokeswoman Sgt. Lisa Bowman said that Leavitt died from an injury suffered during a celebratory act that resulted in her accidental shooting.
Deputies arrested the Leavitt’s boyfriend, 24-year-old Steven Michael Lucas. He remained in Sacramento County Main Jail on Monday, booked on suspicion of felony involuntary manslaughter.
His bail was set at $190,000.
