Elk Grove police detained several people Thursday afternoon after a vehicle crashed into a restaurant at Whitelock Parkway and Atkins Drive.
Police said they received a report of shots fired in the area, and the vehicle’s occupants fled the area following the crash.
The vehicle ended up inside the Wrap ’N Roll Sushi Burrito restaurant, but no one was injured. The only customer in the restaurant was at the counter, not in the dining area affected by the crash.
Cashier Maria Abril was taking an order for a customer when the black Mercedes-Benz sedan crashed into the restaurant.
“All I saw was glass flying,” she said. “At first I thought it was a really strong wind.”
Three men, looking dazed, jumped out of the vehicle, Abril said. Two passengers quickly ran from the restaurant, while the driver apologized for what had occurred before fleeing, she said.
Moments after the crash, Abril said she heard gunshots in the vicinity.
“They just wanted to get out of the area,” she said of the men, who appeared to be in their 20s.
Elk Grove police said they found at least one bullet hole on the Mercedes, but they have not found any shooting victims.
Police spokesman Christopher Trim said police received a call at 2:49 p.m. of shots fired at Whitelock Parkway and Atkins Drive. Shortly afterward, they received a call reporting the crash.
They also received a call reporting that a shot had been fired at a man outside his house a few blocks away, in the 10000 block of Tittle Way. The shots reportedly were fired from a dark-colored vehicle. Police said they had not determined whether it was the vehicle involved in the crash.
Franklin High School and Toby Johnson Middle School were locked down for about 30 minutes as officers searched the area.
Elk Grove police reported that no shooting victims have been found, though several people were detained nearby. At least one person was detained following a vehicle stop at Bruceville Road and Whitelock Parkway. No arrests have been made.
