Sacramento police said they arrested a woman Thursday night in midtown on suspicion of stealing a bicycle that police had planted there to catch a thief.

Officers responded to the 2600 block of O Street around 7 p.m. when they were alerted that a so-called “bait bike” was being stolen. When officers arrived in the area, they found Rebecca Stinson, 19, with the bike. She was arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property, theft and a probation violation.

The two-year-old bait bike program, launched first in midtown, has expanded to other parts of the city, including Natomas and North Sacramento.

The bicycles, equipped with GPS tracking, were deployed 160 times last year, resulting in 60 arrests and citations.
