Child molestation results in prison sentence of 158 years to life

A 50-year-old man was sentenced Friday to 158 years to life in prison for sexually assaulting a child.

A Sacramento County jury in November convicted Raymond Chavez of child molestation, 18 counts of child molestation by force or fear, and four counts of oral copulation with a child younger than 10 years old, according to a Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office news release. Chavez was sentenced by Sacramento Superior Court Judge Helena Gweon.

Authorities said Chavez molested a female relative from approximately 2006 to 2012. The abuse began when the victim was about 6 years old and took place in Fresno and Sacramento counties. He threatened the girl, telling her that if she told anyone about the molestation no one would believe her and she would be taken away from her family.

Prosecutors said the victim suffered in silence for years before finding the courage to tell someone during a camping trip in 2014.
