Man convicted in death of girlfriend’s puppy

A Sacramento County jury has convicted a 58-year-old man of felony animal cruelty in the death of his girlfriend’s puppy.

David Earl Billoups and Lynda Witherspoon were in a romantic relationship. On Feb. 19, 2015, the two were at Witherspoon’s residence and argued in her bedroom, according to a Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office news release. When Witherspoon told Billoups she wanted to end the relationship, Billoups walked out of the room. Witherspoon then heard Billoups curse at her 2-month-old pit bull puppy, Baby, followed by a thumping noise. Witherspoon ran out of her bedroom and saw Baby twitching. The dog died at the residence.

Sacramento Animal Care Services performed a necropsy and determined that the dog had two broken vertebrae, a fractured skull and bruising on the skull, authorities said.

Billoups is to be sentenced March 17 by Sacramento Superior Court Judge Matthew Gary.
