A Sacramento County jury has convicted a 32-year-old man of second-degree murder in the 2013 shooting death of a neighbor at a Del Paso Heights apartment building.

Jurors on Monday also found that Avery Draughty discharged a firearm in the crime, according to a Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office news release.

Draughty and his girlfriend got into an argument with their upstairs neighbors in the 3700 block of Balsam Street on Nov. 28, 2013. The neighbors, Tiffany Silva and Devlon Pittman, went back to their apartment. Draughty then got a gun from his apartment, went upstairs and fired one time, killing the 31-year-old Silva, authorities said.

Draughty fled and remained on the run for nearly 17 months. He was arrested by Rancho Cordova police in March 2015.

When Draughty was found, authorities said, he had changed his appearance, obtained fake identification cards and lied to police about his identity.

He is to be sentenced March 16 by Sacramento Superior Court Judge Marjorie Koller.
