Davis police are investigating a Tuesday morning attack on an Ethiopian man as a hate crime.
Officers responded about 10:42 a.m. to the Amtrak train station, where they contacted the victim, a 32-year-old man, who said he was attacked by a white male. The victim said the assailant approached him and made an unprovoked and racially derogatory comment toward him. He then kicked the victim in the shin and pushed him down using his hands, according to a Police Department news release. The victim lost his balance and fell onto a concrete bench. Police said he suffered minor scrapes but declined medical attention.
The assailant is described as white, 40 to 50 years old, 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a medium build, short brown hair and a mustache. Police said the victim indicated his attacker may have been holding a bottle and was likely intoxicated.
Police said they are investigating the case as a hate crime because of the derogatory remark made before the attack.
