Suspect in fatal Sacramento DMV assault arrested

The California Highway Patrol reported Saturday the arrest of Cornell Gilkey Jr., 33, following a Friday fight at a Department of Motor Vehicles field office that left another 33-year-old man dead.

Gilkey was taken into custody near Calvine Road in south Sacramento and booked into the Sacramento County jail on suspicion of murder, officers reported.

The incident occurred shortly after noon Friday, when Gilkey and Antoine Michael began fighting in the DMV parking lot at 4700 Broadway. Michael was knocked unconscious and Gilkey fled, but was ultimately identified through witness statements and video surveillance, according to the arrest report.

Michael was pronounced dead at UC Davis Medical Center due to “major trauma,” CHP Officer Michael Bradley said. An investigation is ongoing.
