Q: Has the killing of the boxer on Father’s Day morning in 2003 near Old Sacramento ever been solved?
A: No arrests have been reported in the shooting death of 25-year-old Derek Curtis Mathis, an amateur boxer, on June 15, 2003.
According to stories in The Sacramento Bee, Mathis was found wounded on the sidewalk on the south side of Denny’s Restaurant at Third and J streets. Next to him was a 21-year-old man who also had suffered a gunshot wound. Police said it did not appear the two men were acquainted.

Police found the men after gunshots were heard as a large crowd spilled out of Old Sacramento bars about 2:05 a.m. Mathis was taken to UC Davis Medical Center, where he died about seven hours later. The other man survived.
