Sacramento police officers are searching for a man who allegedly shot a woman at a busy Fruitridge Road shopping center while trying to steal her purse.

Police spokeswoman Traci Trapani said the victim is in serious condition but expected to survive after being shot multiple times shortly after noon Saturday.

A description of the gunman, an adult male, has not been released. Officers on Saturday interviewed witnesses, as well as questioned a woman who was in the vicinity of the shooting and is a “person of interest” in the case, Trapani said.

Police responded to the shooting in the parking lot of Stockridge Plaza Shopping Center at the corner of Fruitridge Road and Stockton Boulevard at 12:11 p.m. The center includes a Dollar Store and a Foods Co., as well as several other businesses.

According to Trapani, the gunman tried to grab the victim’s purse as she was loading her car. A struggle ensued and the man shot the woman several times before fleeing on foot.
