A Marysville woman drowned Saturday night after her friend drove past a Caltrans blockade into a flooded portion of Highway 70 in Yuba County, police officials said. The driver of the car has been arrested by the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office on charges of vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.
The woman was identified as 51-year-old Chia Xiong, according to Yuba County sheriff’s Deputy Tracy Pomeroy. Xiong and Neng Yang, a 55-year-old Sacramento man, were driving northbound on Highway 70 when Yang entered the flooded area at 65 mph, Pomeroy said.
Yang escaped from the car, but Xiong wasn’t able to get out, Pomeroy said. The vehicle was submerged in nearly eight feet of water – a result of the weekend’s heavy rains.
The incident is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
